Lifetime Achievement Award 2023 Tamás Andor

Tamás Andor cinematographer
Béla Balázs Award winner, Merited Artist of Hungary, Outstanding Artist of Hungary

Tamás Andor was born on 20 December 1937 in Budapest. He started studying cinematography at today’s University of Theatre and Films Arts, after an unsuccessful entry exam to be an actor. We may say he chose his career by chance as it was another student and friend, future actress Teri Tordai, who submitted his application to the cinematography major. At this entry exam the great cinematographer György Illés, who later became his master, asked him why he wanted to be a cinematographer - and he only answered that he definitely wanted to attend this particular school.

From 1965, when he finished his studies, he made short films at Mafilm, then from 1970 he started working in feature film production. He has worked with some of the best Hungarian film directors such as Gyula Gazdag, Sándor Simó, Márta Mészáros, Károly Makk, Gábor Koltay, Péter Bacsó, Pál Schiffer, Péter Szász.

Some of his most important movies are: Black Train (1970); My Father's Happy Years (1977); Cséplő Gyuri (1978); Another Way (1982); The Train Killer (1982); Oh, Bloody Life (1983); Love Till First Blood (1985); Banana Skin Waltz (1986); Stalin's Bride (1991); Smouldering Cigarette (2001); But Who Are Those Lumnitzer Sisters? (2005); Virtually a Virgin (2008).
